Instructor:  This course will be taught by Paul Geltner, DSW, LCSW, who has practiced, taught, consulted, and written about psychoanalysis for over 40 years.

This course will fulfill the requirement for a three-hour continuing education course on maintaining appropriate professional boundaries as mandated by the New York State Board of Regents on October 22, 2022.  This requirement applies to anyone who renewed their license on or after April 1, 2023.  If you have completed a similar approved course after your renewal date, you have fulfilled the requirement for your current 3-year renewal period.   If so, you do not need this course or any similar course again until after your next renewal date.  Taking it now will not be credited to your next renewal period.  However,  you are welcome to take it to meet other CE required hours, if you are interested in the material.)

The course will cover the New York State regulations and laws concerning dual relationships, sexual relationships, and financial relationships. It will also discuss related issues, including social contacts outside clinical sessions, texting, and gifts.

In addition, the course will also discuss these issues from the perspective of psychoanalytic ethics and practice.  Furthermore, it will discuss aspects of Modern Psychoanalytic practice that risk being misinterpreted by patients and therefore create the appearance of boundary violations.  To this end, I will discuss the concepts of the reasonable ego and the afflicted ego and how to work with patients to prevent this potential problem.

Learning Objectives

After completing this class, students will be able to:

1. Understand regulations about sexual relationships with current clients and accepting former sexual partners as clients.

2. Understand regulations about accepting as a client anyone to whom the clinician is related by blood or legal ties.

3. Understand regulations about barter and gifts

4. Understanding regulations about entering into financial relationships with clients about anything other than paying for the clinician’s services

5. Understand that anything that creates the impression that the appearance of exploitation of the client can be viewed as a boundary violation.

6. Understand the concepts of the reasonable and the afflicted ego, and how interventions must be formed with the patient’s afflicted ego in mind.

Location: This course will meet online on a secure videoconferencing platform in a live interactive format.

Teaching Method:  Lecture and class discussion, with ample time for questions and discussion.

This class will provide 3 CE Ethics Continuing Education for NYS-licensed social workers, Psychologists, and Psychoanalysts.  (I do not know if this will meet the requirements for clinicians who hold other licenses.  I would check with your professional board to find out.)
