Review from Modern Psychoanalysis

Robert Marshall, author of Resistant Interactions and (co-author, with Simone Marshall) of The Transference Countertransference Matrix, in Modern Psychoanalysis, 38:2.

Paul Geltner has authored a book that will interest students and practitioners of psychoanalysis; novices will also be attracted to his system, his “experience near” language, and extensive clini-cal dialogues; modern psychoanalysts will feel refreshed and empowered by his reasoned perspective; supervisors will em-brace his flexible systematic approach to common, stubborn clinical impasses; theoreticians will be intrigued by his attempt to provide a system that evolves hypotheses for clinical testing; and all clinicians will appreciate and want to further study his practical approach to everyday thorny issues.

One of the best new books on psychoanalysis [5.0 out of 5 stars]
“If you want to understand why psychoanalysis is still one of the most powerful tools of transformation going, read this book. Geltner's book is really a tour de force, especially in terms of the curative power of the therapeutic relationship--though not in the way you might think. His model essentially conceptualizes the therapeutic relationship in a much more precise and sophisticated way than I've heard described before, and really goes a step beyond both object relations and intersubjectivity in that regard. Unlike so many psychoanalytic authors, Geltner writes in a way that is both experience-near and user-friendly. It's easy and fun to read. Even if you're not psychoanalytically minded, I think you will find gems of insight that you can use in your work here, especially with difficult cases that have eluded progress. And the clinical stories are themselves so usefully entertaining.”

New Clarity [4.0 out of 5 stars]
“I found this text shed bright light on communication behaviors we are usually aware of below the surface of our direct awareness. Geltner laid out many dimensions with such clarity that they are easier for me to identify now in myself and in my work.”

Exceptional!!!! [5.0 out of 5 stars]
“Dr. Geltner does an exceptional job of differentiating nuances in psychoanalytic theory and technique. This book is accessible and clearly written and is enlightening for both seasoned and newer analysts. I wish this book was available when I was in training!”
